Women comprise a majority of the membership in scientific societies focused on marine mammalogy. However, like other STEM fields, women continue to be underrepresented in career, and especially leadership, positions within the field of marine mammal science. In addition to challenges encountered by women seeking higher STEM positions, women face unique barriers to success when advancing their careers in marine mammal science.
The Women in Marine Mammal Science (or WIMMS) initiative was formed in 2017 following a workshop focused on identifying and breaking down the barriers to success faced by women in this field. Moving forward with the ideas and outcomes from this workshop, the WIMMS initiative seeks to promote the recruitment, training, support, and retention of women from diverse backgrounds in marine mammal science through a variety of activities and events.
